Hewlett-Packard Co. Friday announced that it plans to acquire Scitex Vision Ltd. in a move that will expand HP’s large-format printing business.

Scitex Vision, in Netanya, Israel, is a maker of wide and super-wide format printers for industrial applications and signs, such as billboards and banners. HP will purchase the printer maker for US$230 million.

“The acquisition complements HP’s existing product portfolio of large-format printers and HP digital presses,” HP said in the statement.

Scitex Vision had revenue of US$142 million for the one-year period that ended on June 30, HP said. The company has principal subsidiaries in the U.S., Belgium, China, Mexico and South Africa, in addition to presences in 75 more countries, it said.

Wide-format printing is one of the fastest growing segments of the printing market and acquiring Scitex Vision will give HP access to its proprietary print head technology, HP said. As part of the deal, HP will receive a license to use the Scitex brand name from Scitex Corp. Ltd., Scitex Vision’s parent company.

HP expects to close the acquisition of Scitex Vision within 90 days, at which point it will be rolled into the company’s Imaging and Printing Group, it said.

Nostalgia

This was sent to us by Mike Sinigaglia who found it for sale on eBay for $0.99.
Looks familiar? It is a label for ink-jet printer paper optimized for Iris printers for medical applications.
In 1996 Scitex established the Scitex Medical Imaging subsidiary in the USA. The subsidiary’s goal was to focus on developing systems for the medical imaging marketplace. Called Scitex Medical Systems, Inc., it introduced two new products based on Iris platform: the Unitone B/W and Varitone color printers that output “near-diagnostic-quality” images on paper. Applications for the printers include outputting a wide variety of medical images, such as ultrasound and CAT scans, and magnetic and nuclear radiation scans. Companies such as Picker International, Inc., Philips Medical Systems Nederlands B.V., Diasonics Ultrasound, Inc., and Elscint Ltd. have signed with Scitex to market the printers.
The subsidiary was folded after less than two years.

Yair_Shamir

On June 2 the Israeli business publication TheMarker Online reported that the ExScite Yair Shamir will be nominated chairman of the board of Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI), one of the largest companies in Israel.
Yair is not giving up his other positions. Minister of Defense Shaul Mofaz announced the appointment on June 6th. Shamir is chairman of Shamir Optical Industries Ltd. (Nasdaq: SHMR; TASE: SHMR) (which last month became the first kibbutz company ever floated on Nasdaq), former executive VP and general manager of Scitex (Nasdaq: SCIX; TASE: SCIX), former CEO of Strauss-Elite (TASE: STEL), former executive VP of the Challenge Fund Etgar, and former chairman of El Al Israel Airlines (TASE: ELAL). He accepted Mofaz’s offer of the IAI position, despite the burden of his other activities. Shamir is now chairman of high-tech company VCON Telecommunications(Nouveau Marche: VCON), and has been the company’s CEO. VCON develops advanced video call systems. He is also a member of the board of directors of Orckit Communications (Nasdaq: ORCT; TASE: ORCT), Mercury Interactive Corporation (Nasdaq: MERQ), and DSP Group (Nasdaq: DSPG), where Eli Ayalon is chairman and CEO. He is also chairman of the Catalyst Fund , an Israel based venture capital fund investing in late-stage companies mainly in the technology sector. In his new position,
Shamir will lead the issue of 20% of IAI on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange this year. This issue is the reason why a chairman was recruited from the business sector, instead of from within the defense establishment. Minister of Finance Benjamin Netanyahu is making Shamir’s agreement to promote privatization of IAI a condition of his appointment.
The Israeli finance minister Netanyahu, who has not yet given his final consent to the appointment, said, “Yair Shamir is a worthy candidate, but his suitability for the job will be judged by his willingness to advance the company’s privatization.”
Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) $2 Billion a year company, is providing products and services to defense and civil aerospace markets.
Established in 1953, IAI has played an integral role in making Israel a regional superpower, developing the country’s independent space capability, and supplying the IDF and defense forces worldwide with unique and cost-effective solutions for a wide range of military needs.  The company has developed the world’s first operational Anti-Tactical Ballistic Missile and is a global leader in totally integrated UAV solutions, as well as the conversion and upgrade of aircraft.
IAI has ten core areas of activity: Space; Theater Defense; Development and Manufacture of Commercial Aircraft; MRO & Conversion of Civil Aircraft; Military Aircraft & Helicopter Upgrades; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles; Intelligence Systems; Homeland Defense; Naval Systems; and Ground Systems.

LONDON, May 4 (newratings.com) – Photography film giant Eastman Kodak Co (EK) has received the European Union (EU) anti-trust approval for its proposed acquisition of Canada-based Creo Inc, a manufacturer of digital printing equipment.

Eastman Kodak had announced in January its decision to purchase Creo for $980 million in cash. The deal is part of Eastman Kodak’s efforts to reduce its reliance on photographic films. The European Commission, the regulatory arm of the EU ruled that the merged company is unlikely to impede effective competition. The EC also ruled out the possibility that the company would be able to offer more fully integrated pre-press services, while mentioning that there would be many alternative competing sources of supply.
